Moles

Moles, also called nevi by dermatologists, are common types of skin growth. They are small, brown, flat, or raised spots that arise from a cluster of pigment cells, called melanocytes. They can be present on any part of the body, including on your hands, feet, nails and genital areas. Congenital moles can be present at or shortly after birth; most moles appear in childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood.

Unusual or atypical moles and melanoma need to be distinguished from benign moles. It is extremely important for early detection and timely treatment. The telltale signs of an atypical mole or melanoma are 1) Asymmetric shape, 2) irregular Border, 3) uneven Color, 4) Diameter greater than 6mm, 5) Evolving change. These are famously called the ABCDE guidelines for melanoma screening that have saved many lives.

However, atypical moles and melanoma vary in their appearance. Some show all of the features, but some may only have one or two. At Sigma Dermatology, we highly recommend you have a skin cancer screening with our board-certified dermatologist. Please contact us to schedule today.
