Warts
Warts are hyperkeratotic, rough textured proliferation on the skin and mucosa driven by the human papillomavirus (HPV). It is particularly common in children, but may arise at any age. It transmits through direct contact or self-inoculation. In children, 50% of the warts disappear in 6 months even without treatment and 90% are gone in 2 years time. In adults, warts are more persistent. As dermatologists, we are equipped with multiple treatment modalities including cryotherapy, electrosurgery, topical chemotherapy, cytotoxic agent, and immune response modifier.
Lastly, warts in the genital areas warrant special attention as it is often sexually transmitted. Certain types of HPV can cause vulvar, cervical and penile neoplasm. We work closely and collaboratively with gynecologists and urologists.
