Melasma

Melasma is brown or grayish blotches on the cheeks, forehead, chin, and lips. It is sometimes referred to as the mask of pregnancy, because is it can be triggered by an increase in hormones in pregnant women. The sun is also a major exacerbating factor. Melasma is a persistent and vexing condition. First step is to ask our dermatologist to confirm your diagnosis. Treatment of melasma requires a multi-pronged approach. At our practice, we will recommend you the right type of sunscreens that blocks the sun. We are knowledgeable and experienced with various topical medications, such as hydroquinone, azelaic acid, antioxidants, and a novel intensive pigment corrector. We will combine and rotate them for your treatment, so that their brightening effect is maximized and their side effects are effectively avoided. We are also experts in adding adjuvant modalities like chemical peels and laser treatment. You will need a board-certified dermatologist in our practice to guide you, as some of the treatments you have heard or read may be ineffective, and sometimes unsafe.
